Who We Are and What We Do

What we do

All SIAS case workers have SEND legal training run by the National Information Advice and Support Service. That means we give legally-based and easily accessible information, advice and support about SEND including your rights and responsibilities and those of schools, colleges, the local authority and other education, health and social care professionals.

We are trained to give you accurate, useful and relevant information and advice to empower you to make decisions about your education or the education of children or young people you have responsibility for.

We can help with:

  • Explaining legal processes, including Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments, EHC plans, appeals and tribunals, so that you know what you need to do and when.
  • Preparing for meetings and communicating with professionals about you or your child's education.
  • Developing a good working relationship with your child's nursery, school or college.
  • We can help you work out what's important and what to focus on.
  • We can signpost you to information about your or your child's special educational needs so you have the information you need to make decisions
  • We can attend meetings with you if the situation is particularly difficult

As an impartial service we won't make decisions or recommendations for you or go to any meetings without you.  We are not trained to give financial advice.

Unfortunately, we are not able to work with families who are receiving SEND information, advice or support from other independent services or advisers.

The SIAS team treat any information you share with them as strictly confidential and will not pass on information to anyone else without your consent.  If you would like to know more about how we collect and use our data please read our privacy notice.
